Both the fungus Scleroderris lagerbergii Gremmen and summer frost were implicated in the death of seedlings of Pinus resinosa Ait. and Pinus banksiana Lamb. [= P. divaricata (Ait.) Dumont] in the Goulais Kettle Frost Pocket in central Ontario, Canada. This fungus was responsible for the preponderance of early seedling mortality, with the survival differential between inoculated and uninoculated seedlings decreasing slightly with increasing elevation in the depression. A mechanism whereby inoculum is recirculatcd to the seedlings by wind vortices was identified and described.
