Behavioral observations coupled with the nature of their natural habitat strongly suggest that bats rely heavily on acoustic signals for social communication. Acoustic recordings were made of signals emitted by adult and infant Carollia perspicillata under both seminaturalistic and experimental conditions. Playback and retrieval experiments were also conducted to determine adult recognition of infants on the basis of auditory cues alone.
