Summary Histochemistry on the cervical, thoracic, and abdominal esophageal muscle of immature, young, and adult normal dogs revealed type IIA striated musculature in contrast to some other species. No other types or subtypes were observed. This suggests that esophageal muscle type is established at birth and does not vary or that any variation has been completed by 4 weeks‐of‐age unlike some canine limb musculature.
