Factors Responsible for Smaller Pelvic Muscle Mass in Dysplastic Dogs

Pectineus muscles of 23 German shephard dogs were studied. 10 dogs had normal hips, 13 dogs had hip dysplasia. The relative weight of each pectineus muscle was determined, when the dogs were 24 months old. Cryostat sections were stained for demonstration of ATPase, thereby differentiating muscle fibres into type I (slow twitch), type II (fast twitch) and intermediate fibres. The results (Tables 1–3) shows, that the relative pectineus muscle weight was smaller in dysplastic dogs and there were significantly fewer type I muscle fibres in the pectineus muscles of dysplastic dogs.
