In the halves of heads of Brasilian adults of both sexes, the course of the N. glossopharyngeus through the Foramen jugulare, as well as its relations to surrounding anatomical elements were studied. Among 32 cases, there were 6 completely atypical situations which are described in the text and shown in the illustrations. There ist strong evidence that the usual descriptions of the text books cover only partially the real topography of this nerve.
