The present study aims to characterize the main morphological changes occurring on the bovine ruminal papillae during pre‐ and postnatal development. Light microscopic observations of the ruminal wall from bovine fetus (3 to 9 month fetal age) and from crossbreed (Holstein‐Frisian) calves (5 to 60 days‐old) were analysed. The results suggest that the postnatal papillary development corresponds mainly to a fully actualization of the differentiation pattern already developed at the prenatal stage.
