Summary Progesterone caused a significant reduction in the number of estradiolinduced membranous intranuclear inclusions within the mammotrophs of the hypophysis as compared to controls. The same effect was caused by progesterone‐estrogen as compared to estrogen alone. A type of inclusion was observed in which cisternae of rough ER was located in close proximity to the smooth ER of a typical membranous inclusion, and is considered to be an intermediate stage in the transformation of rough ER of cytoplasmic origin into smooth ER.
