SUMMARY Phaeobotrys solitaria Ettl was found at several localities in The Netherlands; details of its morphology, including ultrastructure, are presented. Culturing experiments revealed its life cycle to contain Ochromonas ‐like zoids. It is therefore removed from the subclass Acontochrysophycidae to the Heterochrysophycidae, order Ochromonadales.
