SUMMARY The young internodes of Cornus sericea L. represent another example of early crushed protoxylem. In this case, the deterioration is not only due to the passive elongation of the tracheary elements during intercalary growth, but also to crushing produced by the multiplication of the parenchyma cells of the protoxylem.
