SUMMARY In the last few years a rapid spreading of Fissidens crassipes Wils. along the main rivers in the Netherlands has been observed. The distinguishing characteristics, the distribution, ecology, and reproduction of the species are discussed. It is suggested that the spreading results from a raise in water temperature in the rivers due to the discharge of increasing quantities of warm cooling water by the industries.
