SUMMARY The assumption of Troll (1939), that the bulbils attached to the abaxial side of the bulb‐scales of Ornithogalum caudatum are stalked axillary buds grown congenitally with the next‐higher situated leaf, has been confirmed by the present morphological and anatomical investigations. The bulbils originate at the base of the abaxial side of bulb‐scales. Analysis of the vascularization showed, however, that they are connected with the enveloping bulb‐scales which are therefore to be considered the actual subtending leaves.
