SUMMARY By analysis of the macro‐fossils in sufficiently large peat samples (1 cm thick, volume circ. 50 cm 3 ) a number of floristically defined peat‐types can be distinguished. The peat types are characterized by the presence or absence of groups of plant species. These groups are shown in a tabular form and give a clear picture of the local successions in the vegetation during peat formation. This is illustrated by two examples from a peat bog near Hannover. From another site, in the vicinity of Bremen, along the border of a peat moor, conclusions are drawn regarding the vegetation of the former bordering swamp (“Lagg”) and shore.
