A bstract The rate of leaf growth of seedlings of Phaseolus vulgaris at different osmotic concentrations of the root environment has been measured. Even a small increase of the concentration gives a distinct reduction in growth. This reduction is the more important the higher transpiration is. The relationship between rate of growth, transpiration rate, osmotic value and diffusion pressure deficit has been determined. Application of the suction tension during 24 hours only has resulted in a fully reversible inhibition.
