A bstract An enzyme solution, obtained from crude extracts from Penicillium spinulosum at 20% saturation with ammonium sulfate, contains besides fatty acid oxidizing enzymes a peroxidase. This enzyme shows up at low concentrations of the mixed enzymes, as well as after dialyzis of the solution, whereby the fatty acid oxidizing enzymes are partly inactivated. This enzyme, which takes part in the destruction of linoleic and linolenic peroxide, catalyzis the release of oxygen from carboxy‐cutin. The latter is formed by pretreatment of cutin by a crude extract from P. spinulosum , containing cutin‐esterase. A scheme for the first steps during the breakdown of cutin is given.
