This paper deals with the recent trend towards the decentralisation of cultural activity in Greece. Firstly, it presents an account of the evolution of the country's cultural policy. Then it proceeds to a discussion of the section of the Five Year Plan for Economic and Social Development (1983‐1987) which concerns cultural development. It treats especially those measures which seek to lessen interregional inequalities in the distribution of cultural goods. The most significant of these measures, such as setting up the regional theatre companies, the support of cultural centers, the establishment or reorganisation of museums, and legislative reforms regarding administrative and financial decentralisation of cultural affairs, are analysed and evaluated
