Internal migration is the major factor leading of the growth of certain metropolitan regions and the decline of others, in the demographic, social and economic spheres. The first section of the paper briefly reviews the studies relating to these changes that arc taking place within the metropolitan areas of various countries. The second section makes a comparative analysis, over period of time (early 1960s to mid‐1980s), between migration patterns of the three metropolitan regions of Israel: Tel‐Aviv, Ifaifa and Jerusalem.
