Toluene‐treated Escherichia coli K12 cells were shown to be able to synthesize proteins. Protein synthesis in cells treated with toluene in the presence of Mg 2+ and at 0 oC, was completely dependent upon the external addition of an energy source, ATP, and was sensitive to antibiotics which are known to inhibit protein synthesis. The toluene‐treated cells were shown to exclusively synthesize membrane proteins.
