Generalized relationships for interpretation of the kinetics of competitive inhibition in ternary‐complex mechanisms for enzyme reactions involving two substrates have been derived. These relationships can be applied to any special case of the random mechanism indicated by Scheme I, including rapid‐equilibrium and compulsory‐order cases, and are also valid for more extended ternary‐complex mechanisms (Scheme II) in which abortive enzyme‐product‐substrate complexes and ternary enzyme‐product‐inhibitor complexes are formed.
