Several lines of evidence for the occurrence of ribosomal precursor RNA in yeast are presented. This ribosomal precursor RNA has been found in the nuclear fraction, it is rapidly labeled with radioactive nucleotides and sediments faster than the two ribosomal RNAs. In addition another rapidly labeled RNA of high molecular weight has been found, which is turning over rapidly and is presumably of messenger nature. It proved to be possible to differentiate between both kinds of rapidly labeled RNA by using the technique of “shift‐up” and “shift‐down” in conjunction with pulse‐labeling.
