This paper presents a personal attempt to understand the historical roots of modern transfusion systems and the clinical practice of transfusion. The author is a blood banker and not a professional historian. The unremitting succession of medical breakthroughs, their twists and turns, and the working life story of people who initiated, enhanced or hampered the progress, are convincing evidence in support of the classical historian's view that learning about the historical and gestational development of knowledge might be as important a source of intellectual stimulation, culture and progress as the knowledge itself ‐ (Bahman Habibi, 2000)
