Aim : The evolution of blood banking into the broad, multi‐disciplinary specialty of transfusion medicine has created the need for a new type of physician ‐ the transfusion medicine consultant. Both laboratorian and clinician, the transfusion medicine consultant offers a wide range of skills and support to both medical and surgical disciplines. This individual can be based in either the hospital or regional blood center. He is a crucial member of the hospital transfusion committee. The latter can play an activist role in patient care.
