The ISBT Working Party on Terminology for Red Cell Surface Antigens was established in 1980 under the chairmanship of Dr. F.H. Allen, Jr., to devise a numerical nomenclature suitable for computerization. The intent is to provide a standard terminology for those who care to use it, not to replace existing alphabetical symbols. The Working Party is also charged with maintaining uniformity in alphabetical designations. The initial meeting of the Working Party was held in Montreal on August 16th, 1980, and a second meeting convened in New York on October 29th, 1981; the decisions to give high priority to assignment of numbers for each of the blood group specificities, to the avoidance of superscripts and subscripts in designations of new specificities, and to the use of capital letters of the Latin alphabet, were unanimous [l]. Subcommittees were formed to deal with the various blood group systems and unassigned low and high incidence antigens separately. This report is a compilation of the recommendations made by the subcommittees and accepted by the Working Party at the Budapest meeting on August lst, 1982 [2] and at the Munich meeting on July 21st, 1984.
