Summary En(a–) red cells show surface alterations reminiscent of those seen in normal cells exposed to proteolytic enzymes. Since this kind of treatment causes inactivation of acetylcholinesterase, a comparison of the activity and properties of this surface‐located enzyme in En(a–) and in normal red cells was made. No significant differences in regard to specific activity, Km, heat stability, inactivation by exogenous agents and density (age)‐dependent distribution were observed.
