. The coating of J‐negative erythrocytes in vitro by soluble J substance of cattle serum was inhibited by a factor called ‘blocker’ that was found in serum. In over 200 cattle tested, the blocker behaved as a lipoid substance that could be removed from serum by extraction with polar organic solvents. Evidence was obtained suggesting that the coating of autologous erythrocytes in vivo was a function of both the concentration of blocker and of J substance in serum. Depending upon the interaction of these 2 variables, the various phenotypic classes of the J blood group system are determined.
