. Using a colony of nearly 1,000 monkeys ( Macaca mulatta ) at the University of Wisconsin Primate Research Center, we have established the first clear‐cut blood group system in this species. By isoimmunization and absorption, 4 specific blood typing reagents (saline agglutinins) were produced. Each reagent detects a Mendelian dominant trait belonging to a single blood group system, called the G‐system. The G‐system consists of 4 alleles ( G l , G 2 , G 3 and G 4 ), 7 phenotypes and 10 genotypes. The factors G 1 , G 2 and G 3 behave as linear sub‐types. Another reagent, G‐4D, reacts only with homozygous genotypes ( G 4 / G 4 ). This blood group system provides extremely useful markers for a variety of anthropologic and genetic studies in primates.
