Summary. With the object of finding lectins useful for cattle blood typing, erythrocytes from 20 cows were tested with saline extracts of seeds from 215 species of the Leguminosae family. Extracts from 35% of the species contained agglutinins or lysins and about two‐thirds of these showed some degree of specificity. Extracts from 19 species contained strong type‐specific agglutinins, and on the basis of their specificity these species were classified into nine unique groups. With cells suspended in a serum‐saline mixture, it was possible to show differences that were not apparent when the cells were suspended in saline only.
