Summary The blood of a normal 38‐year‐old Japanese woman, Mrs. N. exhibited an unusual property in that (1) her red cells were inagglutinable or agglutinable very weakly by various anti‐B sera, (2) her cells failed to react with ordinary anti‐H reagents, (3) a trace of anti‐H was found in the serum, but (4) she secreted both B and H substances in her saliva. Her husband was group O and three of her children were normal group B and one was group O. To explain this finding, we propose the presence of a new, rare, modifying gene ‘w’ which suppresses, in the double dose, B and H substances in the cells without any effect on the secretor system.
