A Contribution to the Comparative Chemical and Biological Assay Procedures for Plastic Containers Used for Blood Preservation

Summary With commercially available plastic bags and foils, comparative chemical assays and biological tests were carried out. A fish test, a cytotoxicity test and a test for haemolysis are described. The fish test in particular proved to be very sensitive, but nevertheless quick and easy to carry out. 10 out of 26 of the tested aqueous autoclavates were found to be toxic in the biological tests. With a few exceptions, a good agreement between the results of the biological test and the results of the chemical assays has been established. Résumé Des sacs et des feuilles en matière plastic procurés au marché ont été éxaminés comparativement par des tests chimiques et biologiques. Un examen biologique avec des poissons, un test cytotoxique et un test d'hémolyse ont été décrits. Surtout le test utilisant les poissons semble être sensible. 10 des 26 plastics examinés par les tests biologiques ont dû être jugés comme toxiques. Sauf quelques exceptions un bon accord fut constaté entre les test biologiques et chimiques. Zusammenfassung An den aus dem Handel bezogenen Beuteln und Folien wurden vergleichende chemische und biologische Prüfungsmethoden angestellt. Es wurden ein Fischtest, ein Cytotoxizitätstest und ein Hämolysetest beschrieben. Von großer Empfindlichkeit, trotzdem aber als schnell und leicht durchführbar erweist sich der Fischtest. 10 von 26 geprüften Autoklavaten erweisen sich im biologischen Test als toxisch. Abgesehen von einigen Ausnahmen wurde eine gute Übereinstimmung zwischen den im biologischen Test und den in der chemischen Untersuchung ermittelten Werten festgestellt.
