The Phenotype Jk(a‐b‐) in the Kidd Blood Group System

Summary The red cells of a patient who had suffered from a hemolytic reaction following transfusion were found to be of the phenotype Jk(a‐b‐) which has not hitherto been reported. The serum of the patient contains antibody which reacted with all cells tested save her own; anti‐Jk b was proved to be a component, but most of the antibody appeared to be cross‐reacting, inseparable, anti‐Jk a Jk b . The patient is a Filipina with some Spanish and Chinese ancestry; her parents were not related. If the phenotype Jk(a‐b‐) exists in whites and negroes it must be rare: samples from Asian people remain to be tested. Résumé Le phénotype Jk(a‐b‐), que l'on n'avait pas rencontré jusqu'à présent, a été trouvé chez une malade qui avait subi une réaction hémolytique à la suite d'une transfusion sanguine. Le sérum de la malade contenait un anticorps agissant contre toutes les hématies éprouvées, sauf les siennes; cet anticorps était constitué en partie d'anti‐Jk b , mais en majeure part il possédait la double spécifité anti‐Jk a Jk b . La malade est originaire des Philippines; elle a des ancêtres espagnols et chinois; son père et sa mére n'étaient pas proches parents. Le phénotype Jk(a‐b‐) doit être très rare chez les blancs et les nègres; chez les races asiatiques il reste encore a être recherché. Zusammenfassung Die Erythrozyten einer Patientin, die eine hämolytische Transfusionsreaktion durchgemacht hatte, wiesen den bisher unbekannten Phänotyp Jk(a‐b‐) auf. Das Serum dieser Patientin enthielt ein Antikörpergemisch, welches mit Ausnahme ihrer eigeaen alle Erythrozyten agglutinierte. Die eine Komponente dieses Antikörpergemisches erwies sich als Anti‐Jk b , die überwiegende Komponente erwies sich als Anti Jk a , Jk b , wobei es nicht gelang, die beiden Antikörperspezifitäten zu trennen. Bei der Patientin handelt es sich um eine Philippinierin mit spanischen und chinesischen Vorfahren. Ihre Eltern waren nicht verwandt. Falls der Phtiäotyp Jk(a‐b‐) bei Angehörigen der weißen Rasse und bei Negern überhaupt vorkommt, ist er sehr selten. Die Frage seines Vorkommens bei asiatischen Völkern bedarf der näheren Abklärung.
