A Blood Lacking the Expected k Antigen

Summary A family is reported in which a Kell negative mother had a child which had no detectable k antigen. Dosage studies with anti‐K showed the child to be a heterozygote. The expanding Kell system to include Kp a , Kp b and K 0 is discussed and a simplified nomenclature based on serological types is presented. It is considered that further studies are required before the genetics of the Kell system can be elucidated, and caution is given on the interpretation of Kell typing results in medico‐legal practice. Résumé Chez l'enfant d'une mète Kell négative il fut impossible de démontrer la présence de l'antigène k. Des études de dosage avec des sérums anti‐K sur les hématies de l'enfant montrèent que celui‐ci est hétérozygote. Le système Kell et ses récentes additions Kp a , Kp b et K 0 sont discutés et une nomenclature simplifiée, adaptée aux types sérologiques, est proposée. De nouvelles études sont nécessaires pour éclaircir les bases génétiques du système Kell, et il est bon d'être circonspect en interprétant les résultats sérologiques obtenus dans ce système en pratique médicolégale. Zusammenfassung Es wird von einer Familie berichtet, bei welcher beim Kinde der Kell‐negativen Mutter das Antigen k nicht nachgewiesen werden konnte. Bei der Prüfung mit Anti‐K‐Seren erwies sich das Kind als heterozygot. Die Erweiterung des Kell‐Systems durch die EigenschaftenKp a , Kp b und K 0 wird diskutiert. Es wird eine vereinfachte Nomenklatur vorgeschlagen, die auf den beobachteten serologischen Typen beruht. Die Abklärung des Erbganges des erweiterten Kell‐systems bedarf weiterer Untersuchungen. Die Ergebnisse von forensischenKell‐Bestimmungen sind auf Grund der neuen Erkenntnisse mit entsprechender Vorsicht zu interpretieren.
