Survival of Group AB Red Cells in a Group A Recipient

Summary A young man was given eleven units of group AB blood in error. He was eventually shown to be of group A. Two remarkable facets of the case were the absence of any serious reaction in the patient and the survival of a small and gradually decreasing number of group AB cells in the patient's circulation for a period of six weeks following the last transfusion of incompatible blood. The survival of these cells in the presence of demonstrable destructive antibodies is a proof of the heterogeneity of red cells and their specific antibodies. Résumé Un jeune home regoit par erreur 11 flacons de groupe AB alors qu'il est de groupe A, comme le montre un examen ultérieur. Ce qui rend le cas remarquable, c'est qu'il ne se produit aucune réaction grave et qu'on a pu mettre en évidence dans la circulation du malade, pendant les 6 semaines qui suivent la dernière transfusion incompatible, un petit nombre, lentement décroissant, d'hématies AB survivantes. Cette survie, en présence d'anticorps destructifs démontrables, prouve l'hétérogéneité des hématies et de leurs anticorps spécifiques. Zusammenfassung Ein juuger Mann mit der Blutgruppe A erhielt irrtümlicherweise 11 Vollblutkonserven der Blutgruppe AB. Dabei wurden folgende zwei Eigentümlichkeiten festgestellt: Erstens zeigte der Patient klinisch keine nennenswerten Zeichen einer Unverträglichkeitsreaktion. Außerdem gelang es, während 6 Wochen in seinem Blut eine geringe, allmählich abnehmende Zahl von AB‐Erythrozyten nachzuweisen. Der Nachweis von AB‐Erythrozyten in Gegenwart von Anti‐B‐Anti‐körpern zeigt eindrücklich die Heterogenität der Erythroaytenpopulation und der spezifischen Isoantikörper.
