It has been known since the 1930's that the develop ment of myocardial ischaemia causes regional wall motion abnormalities in the affected area of the myocardium. The development of transesophageal echocardiography has made perioperative monitoring of left ventricular wall motion possible. Recent studies have shown that regional wall motion abnormalities occur prior to ECG changes, and are a more sensi tive marker of myocardial ischaemia than the ECG. Regrettably it has also been shown that not all wall motion abnormalities are caused by ischaemia . In this workshop methods for detection of myocardial ischemia, using TEE will be presented. Based on video recordings of ischemic myocardium the natural course of ischaemic wall motion will be discussed, and the use of regional wall motion analysis in aneasthesia research will be adressed.
