This thesis deals with automatically processed craniofacial electromyography as a method, as well as with attempts to test the ability of this method to qualitatively and quantitatively differentiate various events and effects in physiological, pharmacological and clinical research. Particular emphasis is placed on covert muscle activity during general anaesthesia and comatose states. Therefore, a basic survey is necessary on the development, properties, innervation and motor control of the muscles involved. Special emphasis is placed on facial mimic muscles which in many respects are unique. A pertinent review of the literature on the measurement of muscle activity in clinical and experimental research is also included.
