SUMMARY The service length of the electrodes, the relation between the primary signal and counting signal of the apparatus, and the saving and the loss of time were studied in the clinical use of patient monitoring equipment. Measurements of heart rate from ECG and respiratory rate from thoracic impedance are satisfactory. Heart‐rate measurements from peripheral pulsations and respiratoryrate measurements from thermistor are useful in special cases, but not for routine use.
