SUMMARY The cardiovascular effect of the new ultrashort‐acting nonbarbituric intravenous anaesthetic agent propanidid (Epontol®) was investigated and compared with anaesthetically equipotent doses of methohexital (Brietal®) in open‐chest rabbits under pentobarbital anaesthesia. With the doses used, propanidid had a more distinct effect on myocardial contractile force, blood pressure and right atrial pressure than methohexital. The differences were statistically significant. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Die kardiovaskulären Wirkungen des neuen ultrakurzwirkenden intravenösen Anaesthetikums Propanidid (Epontol) wurden untersucht und mit gleich stark wirkenden Dosen von Methohexital an Kaninchen mit offenem Thorax unter Pentobarbitalanaesthesie verglichen. In den angewandten Dosierungen hatte Propanidid einen deutlichen Effekt auf die Kontraktionskraft des Myocards, den Blutdruck und den rechten Vorhofsdruck gegenüber Methohexital. Die Unterschiede waren statistisch signifikant.
