SUMMARY Healthy subjects whose alveolar carbon dioxide tensions were maintained constantly at 45 mm Hg by inhalation of adjusted carbon dioxide‐air mixtures were given nicomorphine and pethidine in equianalgesic doses. No difference between reductions in respiratory minute volumes could be demonstrated.
