SUMMARY Halothane was found to reduce the ATPase activity of both myocardial and skeletal muscle myofibrillar preparations. The results support the hypotheses that there is a close association between myocardial tension development and the enzymatic hydrolysis of ATP, and that halothane exerts its cardiac effects by inhibiting this process. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Es wurde festgestellt, dass Halothan die ATPase‐Aktivität sowohl von Myocard‐als auch Skelettmuskel‐Myofibrillenpräparationen reduziert. Diese Resultate stützen die Hypothesen, dass ein enger Zusammenhang zwischen der Entwicklung einer Herzmuskelanspannung und der enzymatichen Hydrolyse der ATP besteht, und dass Halothan seine Wirkung auf das Herz drch eine Hemmung dieses Prozesses ausübt.
