The pigment mutant C‐2A’ of the unicellular green alga Scenedesmus obliquus accumulates protochlorophyllide and small amounts of protochlorophyll in darkness. Protochlororphyll was isolated and characterized by thin layer chromatography and absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The protochlorophyll was photoreduced by light to chlorophyll both in vitro and in vivo.
