The kinetic and regulatory properties of the ATP‐dependent phosphofructokinase from various plant tissues are reviewed. Particular attention is given to the differences in properties between the plastid and cytosolic isozymes of this enzyme. A model for fructose 6‐phosphate utilization in plants is presented which incorporates a role for the pyrophosphate‐dependent phosphofructokinase.
