Experiments were carried out to investigate whether there were clonal differences in cuticuiar resistance to transpiration in tea ( Camellia sinesis ) leaves. The cuticular resistance of’ sun and shade leaves was also compared. The drying rate of detached leaves was measured and used as an estimate of cuticular resistance to transpiration. The results showed that there were clonal differences in cuticular resistance in mature and old leaves but not in young leaves. In clonal tea there appeared to be an inverse relationship between she rate of leaf growth and the cuticular resistance in mature leaves. Shade leaves had a higher cuticular resistance than sun leaves.
