The enzyme LCAT (Lecithin:cholesterol acyltransferase E.C. 2.3.1.43.) plays a central role in lipoprotein metabolism. It is secreted by the liver and catalyzes the transfer of a fatty acid from the 2‐position of lecithin to the 3‐beta‐OH group of free cholesterol to produce cholesterol ester and lysolecithin.
