V iews on the nature of dermatitis herpetiformis have undergone diverse, and at times, divergent changes. For example, in the late 1960s, when we first described autoantibodies to the basement membrane zone in cases with vesiculobullous eruptions,' the late James Jordon, Chairman of the Dermatology Department at the University of Buffalo, characterized them as dermatitis herpetiformis, consistent with the teachings of the French school of dermatology. In contrast, Walter Lever, who had just written a monograph on pemphigus and pemphigoid,^ believed the eruptions should be referred to as bullous pemphigoid. Lever's opinion prevailed in these discussions,^ and the present concepts evolved along other lines.
