A 24‐year‐old woman developed multiple subcutaneous nodules and an abscess on the thigh. Cultures of aspirate from the abscess grew Trichophyton mentagrophytes rather than the expected bacteria. Although dermatophyte infections usually are limited to the stratum corneum, they can rarely involve the dermis and subcutaneous fat. Fungi will usually grow on media used for bacterial cultures, such as blood agar, but the cultures are slow to appear and may be missed if the cultures are discarded too rapidly.
