Recent work indicates that lichen planus is an allergic reaction pattern, particularly following exposure to different chemicals including dyes, color film developers, and gold. It is characterized by angular, violaceous papules sometimes resembling psoriasis and on occasion it can be confused with syphilis. A diagnosis of lichen planus is based on clinical examination of the skin. Typical lesions may require verification by histology or fluorescence. The three cardinal findings in lichen planus are 1) Typical skin lesions described below, 2) Histology showing a band infiltrate of T-lymphocytes in the dermis, and 3) Fluorescence with IgC and C3 at the basement membrane.
