Summary Weed research within the All India Co‐ordinated Research Project for Dryland Agriculture over the past decade has included weed surveys to determine the dominant weed flora in various regions and cropping systems of the country: weed interference studies to determine the losses caused by weeds in various crops, weed control studies involving traditional and improved tillage methods: chemical control of weeds with emphasis on herbicides available in India, and studies of integrated weed‐management systems. Much useful information has been accumulated and improved weed‐control practices have been developed. The strategies for weed‐control research and technology transfer discussed in this paper may be helpful in developing or introducing improved weed control practices in other Third‐World countries.
