Summary: A physical method is established for determining the population in the soil of viable seeds of the parasitic genera Alectra and Striga . Microscopic observation enables seeds of the two genera to be distinguished but it was not always possible to distinguish species within each genus. Correlation of the seed count with number of plants of these parasites was examined and factors lending to obscure correlation discussed.
