The Standing Advisory Committee on Care and Selection of Donors (SAC‐CSD) advises the UK Blood Services on all matters related to the care and selection of whole blood and component donors. It works very closely with the SAC on transfusion transmissible infections and also with the SACs dealing with tissue and stem cell donors. It has responsibility for relevant chapters in the Guidelines for the Blood Transfusion Services in the United Kingdom (the Red Book) and for the Whole Blood and Components Donor Selection Guidelines, which include the Geographical Disease Risk Index used by all the Donor Selection Guidelines. Membership is drawn from a wide geographical base and includes donor care doctors together with nonmedical staff involved in donor care. Topics for discussion include subjects referred to the SAC by the UK Forum of the Blood Services and the Joint Professional Advisory Committee (JPAC). Members are required to keep a watching brief of developments around the world that may affect donor care and selection and to respond to concerns from both donors and staff related to donor selection issues. In recent years a great deal of its time has been spent dealing with the increasing amount of legislation relating to the running of donor sessions.
