Newly registered practitioners that have completed the Institute's registration portfolio have the opportunity to evidence their development of specialist knowledge and competencies in their chosen field by completion of the Institute's record of laboratory training (Specialist Portfolio). Achievement of the required knowledge and competence of the range of analyses expresses the ability of the biomedical scientist to operate at the specialist level within the Healthcare Scientists career pathway and Agenda for Change band 6. The portfolio will contain a completed and signed record of laboratory training in the designated speciality as evidence of the application of knowledge, comprehension and analytical skills. It will also demonstrate that the individual has reflected on their own performance as an independent professional learner, thus meeting the requirements for CPD. Additional evidence of training and internal assessment of competency will support the Specialist Portfolio; with appropriate cross‐referencing to show which aspect of knowledge or skill acquisition is supported. External verification procedures will establish completion of the portfolio as a record of training in the candidate's ‘home’ discipline, supported by a presentation on the candidate's professional practice and extensive laboratory tour designed to verify the candidate's ability to articulate their scope of practice and ‘fitness for purpose’. The presentation will look at the scope of the portfolio, rationale of the assessment procedures and the use of the portfolio in the context of post‐registration education and training.
