The current position will be discussed regarding the stage of development of the leading blood screening assays for the detection of vCJD and their relative progress towards production of test with the required sensitivity and specificity. The regulatory process to be introduced for the control and standardisation of the use of these assays is in development, with the associated key step of assigning them to Annex II A classification. The application of commercial Western Blot format assays to the detection of PrPsc in tissue samples is underway in NBS and HPA. The validation and implementation of these methods for human tissues demonstrates the paucity of human material available for use as standards and controls. It is appropriate to use animal material for these validation exercises.
