Summary. The requirement within the U.K. and Europe to use a standardized black‐and‐white label format from 1 April 1992 in conjunction with an increasing awareness of quality and information technology (IT) pointed us towards the use of print‐on‐demand label systems. The introduction of this system has enabled a greater level of control over the issue, usage and quality of the labels attached to blood and blood products. The system is versatile, secure and responsive to future alterations in blood‐group labelling protocols.
